About "The Legend of Ned Kelly":
In 2003 Director Annie Forbes saw Sidney Nolan's Ned Kelly series exhibited at the City Gallery in Wellington, NZ. Annie was struck by the dramatic possibilities of the paintings so began to think about how the work could be realized into a stage production. When she was appointed as the Artistic Director of Terrapin Puppet Theatre, Tasmania, in 2004 the concept began to materialise into reality. In September 2005 negotiations with the National Gallery of Australia commenced towards a partnership to create the production utilising the Kelly series by integrating puppetry and digital animation to bring the works to life in a dramatic three-dimensional form. To realize this ambitious project, Annie brought together an impressive team of Australian artists to collaborate in three distinct stages of creative process over a 12-month period. The resulting production became Annie's signature work for Terrapin.
